Scale & Polish

Even if you brush and floss regularly at home, you can't always get to the crevices and hard to reach areas of the mouth. That's where our scale and polish cleaning comes in. A scale and polish is a professional dental cleaning that usually occurs during your routine dental examination. This is done to remove plaque build-up and treat the teeth with fluoride to maintain oral health.

What happens during a scale and polish?

The scale and polish cleaning is a standard practice that allows us thoroughly clean the teeth using specialised dental tools. This cleaning has three parts: the scale, the polish and a fluoride treatment.

During the scale, Dr. Dee will scrape away plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that coats the teeth. Our unique tools allow us to get in between the teeth and in the crevices of the molars. After this, Dr. Dee rinses the mouth and applies polish to smooth the surface of the teeth.

The scale and polish cleaning is finished off with a fluoride gel. The gel is placed in a tray that the patient bites down on for 30 seconds and then spits out. It is essential that you refrain from eating or drinking anything for 45 minutes after this.
